you're beautiful

i have no idea why this song gets me so bad...it's utterly amazing...i guess there's something about the moments you have with people that really will last an entire lifetime, even if they're the most isolated, most ungraspable, most un-keepable moments ever.

-----------------------------------------
Yeah, she caught my eye,
As we walked on by.
She could see from my face that I was,
Fucking high,
And I don't think that I'll see her again,
But we shared a moment that will last till the end.

You're beautiful. You're beautiful.
You're beautiful, it's true.
I saw your face in a crowded place,
And I don't know what to do,
'Cause I'll never be with you.

You're beautiful. You're beautiful.
You're beautiful, it's true.
There must be an angel with a smile on her face,
When she thought up that I should be with you.
But it's time to face the truth,
I will never be with you.

things that make me upset

1. uncle sam

i have to pay about $1500 in federal and state taxes next month. needless to say, i am pretty pissed.

2. cold weather

last weekend i was sitting outside in the sun productively doing my reading. today was just the opposite. it is cold. way too cold. and this brings us to #3...

3. unproductiveness

i started out the morning okay, reading my chapter for english 101 (in which i have a midterm on tuesday). unfortunately, i have no idea what happened to the time between coming back up from lunch (around 1:30pm) and 6:30pm, at which point i talked to matt on the phone and wasn't able to figure out what i had done with my afternoon.

4. lots of stuff to do

#3 would be manageable if there weren't actually stuff to do. like the midterm. and homework. and lots of this thing called A12 reading (which i feel bad about because matt is doing way more than i am and i want to help out).

5. will chen

because he's my bestest friend but i am tired of him being a punk. it's his last semester here and while i get to hang out with him when he is sad, i am now ditched for some little freshman crush. *sigh*. boys are such airheads.

sweet springtime!

i have been the proud smeller of hyacinths. i got a beautiful periwinkle-blue pot (mum commissioned their purchase) for girls' day. when it unbloomed (some might even say that they reached this sad state prematurely because some overzealous person overwatered it...) i was sad and the guy at petali (the very beautiful little flower shoppe next to au bon pain here in the square) gave me another (pink/lavender) one gratis! pictures forthcoming?

it has also been splendidly warm (until today when it snowed and hailed). i celebrated by reading on blankets outdoors, and patronizing lots of restaurants. and i mean warm: i wore strappy sandals and a skirt to dinner with will at the blue room. yea! sarah and i had lunch at takemura. whee! pete and i lunched at henrietta's table. all very pleasant.

spring, persist!

somehow that word always comes with a twinge though.

protector of the bread

one of the eight-million *really* cool things i've learned in english 101 (a class called 'the history and structure of the english language'...not, as its name may suggest, english for fourth-graders):

the modern word for 'lady' comes from the old english word 'hlæfdige'.

this word is the compound of 'hlæf' (trans. 'loaf', as in a loaf of bread) and 'dige' (trans. 'one who kneads'). 'hlæfdige', then, means 'the kneader of the bread-loaf'.

the word for 'lord', on the other hand, comes from the OE word 'hlæford'.

this in turn is the compound of 'hlæf' and 'lord' (trans. 'protector'). 'hlæford' (or 'hlaford') means 'protector of the bread-loaf'.

so our grand titles of lady and lord?
the kneader of the bread, and the protector of the bread.

oh yeah.

hmmm?

isnt it curious than when you look at the sun (like when it's behind a cloud and you can make out its distinct outline), it is pretty much the exact size as the moon?
